Indian Tribal Tattoo of the 19th Century

For any of you folks who have seen the show Hell On Wheels, you’ll find this interesting.

“This is a portrait of Olive Oatman. Her family was one of the pioneers of America in the mid 19 th century. While heading to California the family was captured by the Indians who killed the whole family leaving only Olive and her sister Mary Ann (brother Lorenzo left for dead survived, however). Little Mary died shortly after, while Olive after being treated badly was sold to another tribe, the Mohave, where she was quickly greeted and treated as their equal. She also received name belonging to the tribe and this tattoo (blue base), symbol of belonging to the tribe during her years of initiation but also kind of identity card which will cross the beyond.”
